As founder and President of The Hazelbaker Purcell Group, a marketing communications firm in Central Ohio, a new door was opened in 2006.
It began with the breathtaking mosaics in Italy – they completely captivated me. And, after studying the classical setting of mosaics in 2007 at the Miami Mosaic Academy in Miami, Florida, I was inspired to create an original style – a style that was new, fresh and truly unique, one that would emulate my illustration style and give me the freedom to “paint with glass.”
What I find so intriguing is when a person is compelled to touch my work. First they gently guide their fingertips over the cut glass. Every instinct in their body tells them not to touch it, after all it is cut glass, but they are captivated and persist which thrills me.
Painting with Glass
My hand-cut glass art is created one piece at a time – taking a hard, rigid, sharp and unforgiving material like glass, cutting it into long thin strips, and transforming it into a refined and inspirational piece of art.
I have chosen glass as my medium because of the depth, brilliance, opacity, transparency, reflection and refraction that can only be found in glass. I work with a variety of handcrafted glass taking advantage of its aesthetic uniqueness achieved through color variations, textural waves and striations, random bubbles and a variety of other natural effects. The magnificent colors and textures allow me to create pieces with movement, depth, highlights and shadows, subtle variations and dramatic contrast.
My intention is for the eye to move freely from one tesserae to another with little interruption. Therefore, I butt-joint the tesserae without using any grout.
My work is inspired by the beauty in life and all its wonders. As my life has evolved, so has my art. My personal experiences, faith, cultural interests, love of nature, and the people in my life inspire my pieces. I want my art to celebrate all that life is.
Therefore, it is important to me that my pieces tell a story; as they are created for those who want to reveal something about themselves, their personal interests and their love for original art.
